James L. Barrett, Principal

James L. Barrett, Jr., PE, Associate AIA, LEED AP

Jim began his career more than twenty years ago following graduation from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters of Architecture. Jim’s unique blend of education and training give him a multifaceted perspective on every project. His holistic approach has helped him to earn ASHRAE Design Awards for three projects: University of Maryland Baltimore County - University Commons, University of Maryland College Park - South Campus Commons student housing, and the Natty Boh Building. He served as both project manager and lead mechanical engineer on each of these projects.

Jim remains hands-on, as do all of BKM’s principals. They are truly passionate about the contributions they bring to a project. Jim believes in serving the client well: Work harder and smarter than your competitor would—and create designs that are efficient, aesthetic, and easy to execute.

Gary E. Johnson Jr, Principal

Gary began his career in 1987 at BKM, following graduation from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Gary worked directly under Tom Murphy, one of the company’s founders. After seven years with BKM, Gary joined Whitman, Requardt & Associates, a 400-person A/E firm in Baltimore, as the Mechanical Department Head for the Building Design Group. After ten years away from BKM, he returned to the firm in 2004 as an owner.

Gary served as the Senior Mechanical Engineer for the Social Security Administration Annex Building in Woodlawn, Md., which was the first GSA project in the country to be LEED Certified. Other notable projects include eBay’s Phoenix Data Center, Laird Student Housing at the University of Delaware, the National Aquarium in Baltimore Center for Aquatic Life and Conservation, and the University of Baltimore School of Communications.

Gary believes in being an active participant in the design team, while remaining respectfully proactive in the project overall. Anyone who works with Gary knows that just “good enough” is never good enough for him or for his team. As the son of a noted consulting engineer with a 50-year career, Gary says he has spent his professional career attempting to live up to the example set forth by his father.

Mark A. Flickinger, Principal

Mark earned a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1988 and joined BKM in 1995. He is best known for his experience in the systems design for healthcare and research facilities. Mark has designed laboratory space for Nobel Prize winning researchers at The Johns Hopkins University, along with cutting edge research facilities at the University of Maryland, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Institutes of Health.

Mark has worked extensively with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and several private medical centers throughout the Mid-Atlantic regions, In addition, Mark is the principal-in-charge for ongoing projects at the United Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Rajan Battish, Principal

As principal at BKM-MCF, Rajan has more than 15 years of experience in electrical design for Mission Critical Facilities. Rajan leads a new division of design specialists dedicated to the advancement of critical systems designs for Data Centers, Network Operation Centers, and Readiness Centers. Rajan specializes in power infrastructure for Mission Critical Facilities. Rajan holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration degree from Drexel University.

A testament to Rajan’s excellence in his field, are the many successful and highly efficient data center projects which he has designed and managed. Rajan has recent experience managing the m/e/p design, construction administration, and commissioning efforts for mission critical clients. Rajan has published numerous papers on energy efficiency and high reliability in data center design, including grounding for large UPS Systems and various data center trends. He pioneered the 400/230V at 60Hz for large data centers in the US.

Rajan is a registered professional engineer in California, Georgia, Maryland, Nebraska, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Utah. Rajan is NCEES Certified and a LEED® Accredited Professional. He is an active member of National Society of Professional Engineers and IEEE. Rajan has shared his expertise at numerous industry events, such as at the Uptime Institute Conference, Data Center Dynamics, and AFCOM on energy efficiency and high reliability facilities.

Andrew C. Endres Jr., Director of Mechanical Engineering

In Andy’s 23 years with BKM, he’s won multiple ASHRAE Technology Awards and led several notable projects that include: the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine - Aids Research Facility, the University of Maryland Baltimore - Animal Bio-Safety Level 3 Research Laboratory, and the University of Maryland Baltimore - Cancer Research Laboratory. He has been the project engineer for all seven of the buildings on the campus of Carroll Community College, and provided peer review and value enhancement services for the Department of Veterans Affairs national peer review contract.

Andy graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1985. In his role as director of mechanical engineering at BKM, he is known for providing a high quality design product based on sound fundamental concepts. High quality design results in a successful project for the owner, which ultimately results in growth for BKM.

Richard A. Miller, Director of Electrical Engineering

Director of Electrical Engineering

Rick graduated in 1985 from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and joined BKM in 2005. Rick served as lead electrical engineer for the National Aquarium in Baltimore Center for Aquatic Life and Conservation and the Walker Jones K-8 School, among other notable projects.

Rick strives for designs that optimize energy-efficiency, constructability, cost, and maintainability. He’s known for working collaboratively with clients to fully understand the scope of the project and their needs, while utilizing all of a client’s currently available resources. He believes in being accessible and being responsive. In short: Make it happen.

Denise A. Mantegna, Marketing Manager

Marketing Manager

With 20 years of marketing experience in the design services industry. Denise develops proposals, implements and maintains project database, and assists in graphic composition of marketing materials and company branding for BKM. Denise joined the company in 2006. Coworkers and vendors appreciate her strong work ethic, positive attitude, and high energy, which create relationships that are synergistic and effective.

Denise is a member of the Society for Marketing Professional Services and currently serves on the Sponsorship Committee. She is working toward the Certified Professional Services Marketer designation.
