The goal for this 45,000 SF childcare center was to create a stimulating environment for as many as 500 children, ranging in age from six weeks to twelve years; and to accommodate a staff of ninety caregivers and service personnel fifteen hours per day. This complex was organized into a small town by clustering little houses, each assigned to a different age group, around a service corridor. Special features included knee-high windows, children-sized sinks and bathroom fixtures, generously sized great rooms for indoor play, and playful color-coding inside and out to identify the age group that is housed within the quad. An existing 10,500 SF facility was converted for the after-school program. This building houses the infirmary and dining facility. The building was gutted, reorganized, and transformed to integrate esthetically into the new environment. BKM provided m/e/p design services.
