BKM provided MEP services for the 54,300 SF renovation and the 40,000 SF addition to TC Martin Elementary School. The renovation included reconfiguration of the existing portions of the school to meet program needs. With the new addition, the school will house approximately 600 students and is being designed for LEED Silver.
The new mechanical system includes heat pumps utilizing geothermal heat exchange (via vertical wells) as the heat rejection for the heating/cooling system. A condenser / ground water loop will serve individual water-to-air heat pumps locations in mechanical closets adjacent to each classroom. Ventilation will be provided to the classrooms by water cooled dedicated outside air (DOAS) units. The DOAS units will also be tied into the geothermal water loop and will be equipped with energy recovery wheels. The gymnasium & cafeteria will also be tied into the geothermal water loop and be served by individual water to air heat pumps. The administration area and media center will be equipped with a water cooled VRF system coupled with a water cooled DOAS unit. The geothermal well field will consist of 250 total wells that are 400 ft deep and spaced 20’ on center.
The existing plumbing system consists of a well system with a 15,000 gallon hydro-pneumatic tank and water meter located in the main mechanical room. This tank will be removed and replaced with a separate storage tank and pumps for the domestic water system and fire protection systems. The new domestic water storage tanks will be located inside the mechanical room and the fire protection storage tank will be located outside.
