Middletown Elementary and Middle School Replacement

BKM served as the MEP consultant on a new three-story, co-located Middletown Elementary and Middle School project in Frederick County, MD. The HVAC design included VRF with cassette units coupled with DOAS units with energy recovery and duct mounted gas furnaces to provide required ventilation for classroom, media center, and administration spaces; split system DX (refrigerant based) air handling units with gas fired furnaces for the gymnasiums, cafeterias, and fitness room; roof mounted exhaust fans throughout; and dedicated DX units for electrical, telecommunications, and elevator machine rooms. The electrical design included the following: coordination with Potomac Edison for a new service entrance switchboard to distribute power to distribution and branch panelboards throughout the building; a permanent generator system for life safety and optional standby loads;  Frederick County Emergency Management public shelter requirements; power, lighting, HVAC, kitchen, and special systems branch circuiting; LED interior and site lighting systems with relay-based controls; lightning protection system; and addressable fire alarm system with voice-evacuation.
