Patuxent River Building 2360 HVAC Upgrade

BKM provided MEP design services to upgrade building controls and replace four rooftop air handlers at Building 2360, Propulsion System Evaluation Facility, at the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Building 2360 is a single-story, 81,000 GSF structure comprised of laboratories and offices built in the mid-1990s.

The mechanical controls upgrade included redesign of building control sequences for 24 air handling units, lab exhaust fans, chilled water, heating water, and process water systems. BKM worked closely with the controls contractor to develop functional sequences and points lists required for thermal comfort, critical ventilation, and process cooling tasks.

Replacement of the four air handling units included new design providing connections to the new AHU units and electric reheat coils. The general configuration of the new air handing units remained the same as the existing configuration, with the exception that the AHU-14 system was extended to condition a fuel storage room. The new AHU units and AHU-14 heating coil were connected to the existing circuits retained during demolition, fed from the motor control center MCCA. The existing adjustable trip circuit breakers in MCCA had the trip ratings reconfigured as required to serve the new equipment. New circuit breakers matching the existing manufacturer, type, and AIC rating were provided in MCCA, as required.

The project included a full design, but it was design-build. No Cost estimating was involved.
